ProfileSarah Monks is Assistant Director of the Institute for Comparative Literature & Society, Columbia University. She graduated with honors from the University of Arizona with a BA in Psychology and Sociology. She has worked in higher education administration for over 15 years. She held a research assistant position in Animal Sciences at University of Arizona on a USDA-led project documenting town hall meetings between ranchers and tribal elders on the issues surrounding cattle grazing and wild horse populations on tribal and public lands. This experience spurred a life-long commitment to social justice and community activism.
Ms. Monks spent two-years as Activities Director in a home for people with advanced Alzheimer's and dementia. She also had a 20-year career in oriental dance which included political and queer cabaret performance. In her leisure, she continues to participate in the visual and performing arts. Her reading interests include embodied cognition, poetry, and social justice.
