This workshop considers the problem of minority and the constitution of the minority subject as a global problematic that emerged with particular force and clarity in the period leading up to and after World War I, and which played a critical role in structuring global debates about the relation between states, minorities, and human rights. The workshop brings together world regions typically separated by governing distinctions between the history of Europe and those of the ‘darker nations’ to examine the global ramifications of the ‘national and colonial question’ across the long twentieth century, to address the impact of debates about minority rights and identity on intellectual traditions of liberal and radical thought.
