“Islam in Europe”: This paper examines how the presence of Muslim immigrants in Europe, especially after Sept. 11, exacerbates deep-seated Orientalist anxieties. This unease with Islam goes hand-in-hand with the interest in bringing to fore so-called distinctive European characteristics, thereby distinguishing the Europeanness of Europe. I trace how Islam is expelled from what is deemed to be the proper identity of Europe by focusing on the discourse of “cultural difference.”
“The Nation Form: The Case of Turkish Nationalism”: Going through recent theories of nationalism with an emphasis on the concepts of mimesis, subject, and identification, this paper examines Turkish nation-building and nationalism.
