Muhsin J. al-Musawi Publishes New Book, Arabic Disclosures: The Postcolonial Autobiographical Atlas

July 1, 2022 – Achievements

On June 15, 2022, the University of Notre Dame Press published Arabic Disclosures: The Postcolonial Autobiographical Atlas by Muhsin J. al-Musawi. This book explores a variety of autobiographies of prominent Arab writers from the 1920s to the present to provide a comparative analysis of Arabic postcolonial autobiographical writing. Al-Musawi shows how these autobiographies convey both the history and the successes and failures of the secular ideology of the Arab nation-state. Al-Musawi studies some of the major pioneers in the development of modern Arabic thought and literary expression, including Jurjī Zaydān, Mīkḫāˀīl Nuˁaymah, Aḥmad Amīn, Salāmah Mūsā, Sayyid Quṭb, and untranslated works by the prominent critic and scholar Ḥammādī Ṣammūd, and others. The book draws a map of Arab thought and culture in its multiple engagements with other cultures and will be useful for scholars and students of comparative literature, Arabic studies, and Middle Eastern studies, intellectual thought, and historical studies.
