Introduction of Pixel Analysis

This series of works offers the possibility of expanding the artistic vocabulary of printmaking. Its conception stems from traditional Chinese movable type, draws on wood engraving techniques of the West, and embodies the core idea of digital matrix in the modern era. Pixel Analysis attempts to establish a gigantic pixel database that would resemble the screen structure of the computer. Yang Hongwei designed and carved over a hundred thousand wood pieces by hand, which he terms “pixel modules”. The modules are woodblocks of varying sizes. Using his engraver’s tool, Yang carved each pixel module to a grayscale of 99 to 1 and assembled them for the purpose of image making. The combinations of modules can produce a kaleidoscope of images.
