CUHJI’s walking tour of the Morningside Heights campus recounts the hidden stories of the university, a deeply troubled and contentious space that is also one of the most powerful centers of knowledge production in the world. In doing so, the tour highlights the university’s history of slavery, colonization, and their afterlives, as well as the institution’s role in currents of social change and movements for abolition. Perhaps most importantly, it highlights untold stories of students, faculty, and employees on the margins of the university and society, as stories of their lives remain in obscurity still. The tour will begin from the 116th and Broadway gate of the university. Please direct any questions to ms5340@columbia.edu.

While the walking tour does not involve stairs and is accessible to folks with limited mobility, it often lasts a little longer than 1 hour, so attendees should keep in mind this duration, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring water if desired.

Walking tour dates for Spring 2022:
Saturday, April 16th: 2:00-3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, April 19th: 4:30-6:00 p.m.
